2014 Explorer
Hi,
I'm wondering if someone might have some input.

I have a 2014 Explorer Limited. MFT with navigation. When we bought the car a few months back, the guy at the Ford dealer explained we could watch movies while in park, (just like on our '10 Edge), but using the RCA jacks. Needless to say, we found out a few days later the jacks were removed from the '14's. Oh well.

I have installed a Lock-Pick and in car mini camera. Used as a baby camera for the rear facing grand babies. (Installed in cargo dome light blank, facing forward/down. Wide angle, night vision- works AWESOME!) The Lock-Pick allows me to bring up a live feed from the camera onto the nav screen whenever I want. It has more inputs for a video source, but thinking a swap of the CD player for a DVD player would be better.

Does anyone know if the CD player can be swapped straight across for a DVD player? Or, fingers crossed, is the CD player actually a DVD player that is locked to only play cd's? (As I've been told)

The set up we have going actually works really well. 4 year old gets the ipad in a headrest mount. She can watch whatever is loaded and can either use headphones, use the ipad speaker or through car stereo via Bluetooth. But occasionally we do find ourselves wishing we could just pop in a DVD real quick.

Any ideas on how we might be able to swap, add, etc a way to watch DVD's?

Thanks,
Michelle

My long term plan is to do like you with the lockpick and baby monitor.
In addition, install a DVD player (in dash style) in the center console or glove box and port it out to the lockpick AND headrest monitors.

We currently have an iPod touch with video out in the center console hooked up to the headrest monitors so we can control the video for our toddler in the back from the front pretty easily. We initially had a tablet like you but it was a pain starting/stopping videos.

Wow, that was an extremely helpful post. Who would've ever thought of a standalone DVD player would help someone who is obviously going for an integrated approach. Bravo... bravo...
I would think a standalone system would be better than trying to play video on the MFT screen which could lead to playing videos while in motion. As we all know that is not only illegal but distracting. The CD player is not capable of playing DVD, again for obvious reasons. The poster was just trying to be helpful by offering a better, safer solution.

But it was not answering the poster's question at all, surely you can see that.
Just because YOU think it's a better idea doesn't mean it works for everyone.

The OP specifically stated that he was sold the option to watch videos on the screen WHILE IN PARK. What does this response have to do w/ any of the OP's questions?

To the OP... the CD drive built in, is a CD drive, you won't be able to play DVD's on it. Your best option is to either retrofit the media hub from a 2012/13 Explorer to get RCA inputs, or to use the lock pick w/ a standalone dvd player stowed away somewhere. I know that the new media hub will work w/ older cars (only you have to find a way to mount it because the mounting bezel is different), but I'm not sure about the old media hub working with new cars. From everything I can find, the media hubs will run around 150$ US.

Firstly, I wasn't replying to the OP's post at all. My response was to another member's post. Secondly, there is no option to watch DVD video in the 2014 Sport so the dealer was incorrect as the OP found out. I think the options you laid out are viable. I still don't understand why the RCA inputs were not installed in the 2014 Explorer models. My 2014 MKT still has them.
