This issue started a week or two ago, my wife just told me about it (she drives it), so i went out for a quick test and here is what i feel is happening:

Going between 40-50 mph, slight downhill grade, let off the gas and coast in D, a strange pulse starts to happen, akin of the transmission engaging for a second, then letting go, repeatedly until you either accelerate or brake. I tried shifting into neutral, and once in neutral the pulsing stopped, so its definitively something going on with the tranny engaging.

On a related note I had a transmission flush done at the local ford dealer two weeks ago, and I changed my spark plugs this weekend as part of routine maintenance.

Has anyone ever experienced this? tried the googlenator but it didnt come up with anything specific at all for the explorer.

Sounds like something wasn't done properly at the dealership during the tranny fluid drain and fill.

Does it also happen in "sport" mode?

Hmm, mine doesnt have a sport mode, just "M" for manual mode, i assume its the same?

So a bit of an update, took it out for a drive after my wife said it felt good today, and lo and behold, its not doing it, strange. I'll keep an eye out for any drivetrain issues for now i suppose, maybe its temperature related since it did do it in the morning when it was pretty cold (45ish F), and now that i drove it it was almost 60 F.

Yes, 'Manual' mode. Hard to keep track of all these changes from year to year. :)

It did flip it over to M when i happened last time, but i did not switch gears when it was doing it. Wife took the truck this morning, and reports it is doing it again :\... I'll have to take it out this weekend and try to isolate it as to what gear it might be having issues, although it wont really change much.
