2016 Police Interceptor
Hello folks.

I purchased a 2016 PIU at a Auto Auction in the past couple weeks.
I'm quite happy with my purchase and after some cleaning and detailing, its a sharp ride.
My immediate issues are:
1. Passive entry system and
2. Rear door entry system

1. The vehicle came with 5 spare keys, none of which are chip keys so I have to assume there is not a chip key system installed.
It also did not have any type of key fob, to unlock the door automatically.
Surprising for a 2016 but I assume the police department purchased this with the bare bones options.
I purchase the aftermarket key fobs and attempted to program them. But... when following the instructions of cycling my ignition from off to on 8 times, without starting the vehicle, mine would not go into programming mode. (the door locks will lock, then unlock) I did speak with a service department at my local Ford dealership and they all seemed stumped. They stated that the original list of options for my vehicle did include 'Passive entry system IE: key fob but said they could try to diagnose and possible program, with no guarantee, for $120...
Thought I'd try here with you all before I do that. Anyone seen this issue and know of a solution??

2. The rear hatch/door will only enable the latch system if you trigger the switch in the overhead, center console (where your reading lights are) The key must be in the ignition and on. I assume this was to ensure any individuals in the back did not exit the vehicle without the officers say so...
Is there a way to disable this system and leave it off??

Any and all constructive help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum Sean.
Where did you read about the procedure to program the keys? If it was in this Forum, was it for the PIU or retail Explorer? The procedures may not be the same. The Owner's Manul says to see the dealer.
In regards to your second point, if you disable the system what are your other options to open the liftgate? I don't see any advantage to disabling this feature. If you don't want it, don't use it. What am I missing here?

He can't open the lift gate without hitting that switch. Doesn't want to use the key from the outside, I suppose?

So I searched for key fobs (not keys; not a chip key vehicle) for my 2016 PIU. Amazon directed me to several sites. Most state the key fob will work for any Ford. I found several YouTube videos showing the procedure. All was quite straightforward. But my PIU won't go into programming mode...

Issue 2. I am unable to unlock or open the rear hatch door without inserting the key into the ignition and pressing the unlock button.
This is quite inconvenient. I come out of the grocery store, walk to the back and neither the key in the key hole on the rear hatch door or the button will open the back. Only when I get into the vehicle, insert the key, flip the switch, then get out and go to the back and open the door.
Again, inconvenient and quite unsafe..
(Keys in the ignition...nothing to stop someone getting in and driving off or driving me over...

The key won't turn in the back door lock until the key is in the ignition and the button inside is pushed....

After the button is pushed, I believe you then have 40 seconds or so to open the liftgate. I don't know if just disabling that system would allow you to open the 'gate' with the key or not. You would have to somehow program the system to think the key is in the ignition but then what other issues may arise, I don't know. I guess there may be some tradeoffs in trying to use a PIU as a retail unit.
I'm sure that you can't be the only one with this issue given the number of members with a PIU on this forum.

'16 and later need IDS programming from the dealership for fobs to work. The 48 character codes inside each remote need to be entered into the Utility's computer. The 8 times on and off is for '15 and earlier.

To start the time for the back door, you press the overhead console button or the trunk button on the fob. Neither open the door, but unlock it so you can open with the rubbery button on the exterior of the hatch. This can be changed to work with the lock and unlock buttons via Forscan.

The reason for the lock on the back door is so that equipment, etc cannot be accessed. Remember the initial intended duty of these vehicles.

Yep. I think those settings are in the BCM, if I'm not mistaken.

Thank you for your answer and sharing your knowledge!

They may be, the dealer did mine. I do know that the fobs cannot be enabled by Forscan.
I will also add that if you have the dealership also "enable" remote start, this will allow the vehicle to see a hood switch. Helpful if you ever want to put in remote start as the wiring is in place...you just need the switch.

Yep, already installed that. Just gotta save up the dough to enable remote start.

Just to be clear....simply installing the switch will NOT cause the vehicle to "see" the switch. Also cannot be done with Forscan. If you're at the dealer to have the fobs programmed...it;s a good time to have them turn on remote start so that it sees the switch. You won't have remote start until you installed a third party item to actually turn it on and off....

Checked with 3 locally with good reviews. All wanted $150+...
First time a dealer is cheaper than others!! Might as well let the dealer try to make it work for $120...
