2016 Sport with weird dash display

My 2016 Explorer Sport is giving me some weird messages upon start up. The car has approximately 4000 miles on it, and when it is cold, the display to the left of the speedometer will flash between "Dimming" and an erroneous low fuel warning. It starts by saying "6 miles till empty", and then goes back to "Dimming", then it will jump to another number till empty, which is greater than the original 6 mile warning. It will do this a few times, until it finally goes to the correct display. I also get two other error messages. Below are the pictures in the order that the messages occur.










Is this a known glitch as a result of colder weather, or is my car possessed?

Take it to the dealer. Clearly there is an electrical issue going on.

Take it in and demand they fix it or find another dealer who will. I would not let this continue.

You're well within the warranty period and should not have to wait for anything.
Temps dips below 0 overnight where I live and have not seen the same error message.

You can always try to disconnect the negative battery terminal and let the system reset itself, if it's an inconvenience to visit the dealership.

I would have told the dealer if the speedo acts like the gas gauge I might not even reach 5K miles.

Time to find another dealer.

Tell the dealer to go **** themselves. You paid good money for it and it needs to be fixed.

AdvanceTrac and Hill start are part of the ABS / electronic stability control group.

This is a safety critical part and needs attention immediately and should be taken seriously.

This defect meets the safety relevant defect requirement of Connecticut Lemon Law and the dealership has 4 chances to fix it, or Ford has to buy it back.

If you ask me you have either pinched or wires that are chaffing together somewhere in a main bundle of the harness. Could be a screw shot through or a seat bolted down on top of it. Cold weather is causing them to contract and move.

The ESC system and the fuel level system doesn't have any common connectors from what I see in wiring diagrams (not likely softset connection) but that doesn't mean that wires aren't traveling together in the same path.

The dealership that I contacted was one that I was driving by, and I stopped in to ask about the issue. Now that I know more about it the problem, courtesy of sheltonfilms, I will be dropping it off at my preferred dealership for repair. The dealership that said to wait till the first oil change, probably didn't want to service it because they didn't sell it, which I can completely understand.

The service department is completly seperate from the sells department and has no influence over how/if/when they service your vehicle. Whoever you spoke to is diffecient in the performance of their job and you should make the service manager aware of what you were told so it can be documented. People like that are going to run off business, and if I were the delership owner I would want to know about people like.

I agree. This is pure negligence. Those warnings (brake system related) are on the same level as airbag errors.

If something were to happen to you that could have been avoided if the system was working, then that would make them liable for shrugging off a serious defect.

I would contact Ford corporate if it was me.

Arrange to have this looked at by the dealer and actioned ASAP. It may be a sign of other issues as well. You can always send a PM to the IVTteam rep here using this link;

Thanks for your concern. I will be dropping the car off at the dealership, and they are going to look at it tomorrow morning. I prefer not to escalate this to a Customer Service Manager, until the dealership has the opportunity to diagnose the problem, and a repair. Should they have difficulty repairing the vehicle, at that time, I will contact you for additional assistance. Once again... thanks for your assistance.

I picked the car up from the dealership service department this afternoon, and was informed that the problem was a bad cell in the battery that was causing low voltage to the electronics. They replaced the vehicles battery with a new one under warranty, and said that should remedy the problem of error messages. thanks for everyone's input, and should the problem reoccur, I will make additional posts to this thread.

Last night, I drove the car only a short distance to home, and today, I got to drive the car a much longer distance. It might be just my imagination, however, it seems that it drives totally different than before. In this case, different, translates to much better. I don't know how the hill decent works, however, for the first time today, while descending a steep hill, the transmission automatically shifted into a lower gear. I am assuming that this is what it is supposed to do? My wife has a 2016 Limited, and mine is a 2016 Sport, and I can tell that the two cars even though they look the same, have totally different driving experiences. Hers has the lane keeping feature, that this one doesn't, and that along makes driving the car different. Engine performance is also another difference.

They replaced the battery so the transmission will have to relearn its shift points and the idle trim and fuel trim strategy also has to be relearned.
From the manual;

Because your vehicle’s engine is electronically-controlled by a computer, some engine control settings are maintained by power from the low voltage
battery. Some engine computer settings, like the idle trim and fuel trim strategy, optimize the driveability and performance of the engine. Some other computer settings, like the clock and radio station presets, are also maintained in memory by power from the low voltage battery. When a technician disconnects and connects the low voltage battery, these settings are erased. Complete the following procedure in order to restore the settings:

The procedure is on page 290 of the 1st print and on page 289 in the 2nd printing of the Owner's Manual.
The transmission relearn will take place as you drive.
