Hello,

I have a 2017 Ford Explorer 2.3 Ecoboost. I have read a lot about the coolant leak leading to needing a new engine. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening? My vehicle has 82,000 miles and want to keep it for at least another 3 years.

Thanks!

The internal water pump is in the 3.5L and 3.7L engines. Your water pump is mounted externally.

Correct, but the 2.3 are known for having a design flaw that allows coolant into the cylinder 3 & 4. When it gets to this point it has ruined the engine. This is definitely more prevalent in the mustang than the Explorer but it still is a known issue. It is known as “ecoboom” I was wondering if anyone has a known fix to this issue. Trying to prevent an issue before it happens.

Thank you!

Whoops, forgot about that issue.

Oh good, another issue to keep my eye out for. Our 2017 2.3 has already had a new trans and both catalytic converters replaced. Right around 90k on mileage. Any links to this coolant issue? First I'm reading about it.

This link is informative. Lots of info on Reddit too. It’s called the 2.3 Ecoboost - Ecoboom! It’s hard to say what will happen. There are some who have had no issues. I had to replace the PTU, Turbos, engine mounts. If you haven’t already I would consider getting a transmission fluid change and a PTU fluid change. Oil change every 5,000 miles (at least) and use premium fuel. These things are touchy!!
