2017 Ford Explorer XLT

Just bought this 2017 Ford Explorer a couple of months ago, as it has gotten colder it has started (sometimes) making the noise in the above video. You cannot hear it outside, you cannot hear it under the hood, it is coming from behind the dash. It does it whether I've used a block heater or not, it lasts about 1-2 minutes on startup or power on. It does it with stereo all the way down, AC/Heat off. There's no dash lights on.

I have tried scouring the internet and haven't found anything, I have brought it to a shop and they had no idea. They offered to rip apart the dash and figure it out, but it'd cost a lot and no guarantee they'll find it. Short of bringing it to the dealership, I am out of ideas. I was hoping someone here would have an idea, and if not then I will update it with the answer when/if I figure it out for future people.

That sounds like it may be the ignition chime. There is a fuse for that I think..you could at least pull it and see if it stops to narrow down the issue. That is pretty annoying 😂

That is not a sound I have heard before. Does it appear to be louder on the passenger side? Once it stops, will it start up again if you turn the vehicle OFF and then back ON or does it seem that it has to have been parked for a while?

Peter

Does it fluctuate any when you hit the gas?

Some Ford's use a temp sensor with a very small fan to draw interior air into it, it's usually to the right of the steering column behind a small opening in the dash with some small grates over it. I've seen those good bad making a high pitched squeal type noise.

Good idea. I forgot about that.

It has to be parked for a while, once its gone it is usually gone for the day unless there's a huge gap between driving times. It does not do it EVERY time it is cold and has sat for a while.

It is coming from behind the steering wheel, so drivers side. Directly around/behind the display there.

It still makes the normal chime on top of this 🤣
