2018 Sport top speed?

The only Ford I have ever driven that did not have a speed limiter on it. The convertible model is governed at 180mph. I have had this car up to 157mph and it drives like a dream, never noticed the speed. I would not to go that fast in my Explorer or F150 even if they could get there.

What's a caprice? Lol

So true, the Caprice is now an ancient memory......poor GM they are almost out of the Police business now. I heard the Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade retail orders are in such demand that the GM Police Team got told "Regardless of demand your getting a build order of 5000 PPV Tahoes for 2018, that's it" I think Texas DPS buys almost that many every year.

The Explorer Sport tires are only rated at 120 mph? Speeds over that will damage the vehicle? How are the Police Explorers able to reach 130 mph than?

Goodyear Eagle tires specially engineered by Goodyear for PIU and PIS. I was there when they were testing tires to hit curbs at 30MPH. Absolutely amazed at how much engineering goes into a tire and how thorough the engineers are.

152 mph explorer sport

So whats modified on that Sport?..........didn't seem to strained by the sound in the video but obviously, he has tuned it to remove the software restriction on top speed

My pops had 96 Caprice Wagon with the 5.7. Just the other day he said how much he loved that car on the highway. Super smooth and would put you in your seat and keep you there if you floored on the highway. You'd think he could have walked away from a Viper on the highway after hearing him talk about.

btw, I would feel much safer going 152mph in a new Tahoe than I would in a new Explorer.

Came cross this. Talking about the 2015 model:

"The pursuit-rated 4WD Tahoe PPV is an entirely different vehicle. It is essentially the 2WD police package version with a 4WD transfer case. Both have the same performance brakes; the same V-rated Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires, and the same 17-inch steel wheels. Both have the same track-tuned suspension, same lowered ride height, same interior content and the same options. The 4WD police version is limited to 121 mph, while the 2WD police version has a top speed of 139 mph."

So from reading this, is safe to assume the speed limitations come from the limitations in strength (critical speed) of the shafts and not the tires on 4wd models and the top speed of the 2wd is limited by the driveshaft and not the tire rating on the 2wd because V rated tire is 149mph.

"However, for winter driving, a winter tire is needed. It cannot be any tire that fits the rim—it needs to have the speed rating to match the vehicle. The Tahoe PPV runs 121 mph. Most snow tires are speed rated to just 99 mph. Goodyear offers an excellent V-rated winter tire specifically for the Tahoe PPV, the Eagle Ultra Grip GW-3. Some departments in the northern climates run the Ultra Grip year-round."

Some good comparisons in that article between the Tahoe and Explorer.

This is how our local boys roll..

Walker PD still have Some Crown Vics in service and I can't remember ever seeing them with Explorers. I think GRPD and MSP are so big that the need to buy Explorers just because its all that's available.

I am 45 minutes from the MSP Test Grounds and half an hour from Grattan Raceway where they do the speed tests for new police vehicles. Wonder why they don't just use the freeway for testing like everyone else?

You better re-read my post.:)

Would you happen to know if they runflats? I had a nail in my tire once and I drove 2 days before I noticed it going flat.

Civilian Explorers = H rated tires = up to 130mph

Police Explorers = V rated tires = up to 149mph

Advantage: Police.

Civilian Explorers = 121 mph speed limit

Police Explorers = 133 mph speed limit

Advantage: Police.

If the critical speed of the half shafts are indeed 133mph for both models (though it's probably a bit higher as they factor in a margin for safety ((like injectors rated for 85%)), than the civilian and police models both push their luck when going faster than 130mph and would say 150mph is the absolute for the shafts and V rated tires.

I remember flying to Valdosta, GA from Michigan to pick up a retired 1992 FHP Mustang 5.0L notch that the seller bought from the state auction a year earlier back in 1998. On the drive home I tested to see if it would go the full 160mph the police speedo said. 155mph was the fastest I dared and it was stock besides exhaust and pulleys. Stock 5.0l foxbodies are very squirrely past 130mph. Had 225/60-15 gatorbacks and a frame and suspension (blown out) that was designed in the late 70's, with brakes that were inadequate to stop even 4 cylinder at 60mph. 1990 was the first year for the airbags in mustangs, so I did have that going for me.

I don't know what he has done to that spot. Just came across it on youtube.

The rest of the drivetrain probably isn’t up to the duty. Explorers aren’t build that stout anymore.

The sport tires have a speed rating of W.
I was going by the info on the Hankook site for the Hankook Ventus 1 Noble 2 in the 255/50R20 size. It shows 105H (130 mph). As far as I know, that tire is factory standard on all the latest Explorers with 20" wheels.

An air bag @ 155 isn't going to do much good....

Perhaps a Body Bag?

When you're a ****y 20-something with an ex-police mustang, and you have your seat belt on and a newfangled air bag in the steering wheel, you are, for all intents and purposes, immortal.

:burnout:

I'll go along with that...

The ones out of the factory were not run flats unless 2018 production has changed. I do know they offered an optional run flat.
