The fact that they detuned the Platinum never made sense to me being that it's literally the same engine already

For sales, probably didnt want the Platinum to take over the Aviator sales and Explorer ST's.

Also, I recall original only the Platinum and lower tiers were first introduced with the ST introduced later with 400hp. Maybe they were trying to get the most out of the ST's before settling?

Too bad Ford wont update earlier models ECU's, would be nice tho....

Just get the earlier years tuned, then you will be at the same level as a tuned ST

ST was available at launch along with all other trims.
 






Just get the earlier years tuned, then you will be at the same level as a tuned ST
I know but keeping the full warranty and getting the extra hp and tq sounds much nicer.

The ST model was shown days after the Platinum, Limited and XLT were first introduced.

Yes but when order banks opened, all trims were able to be ordered on the same day. So "introducing" the ST later had zero effect on any of the other trims as far as sales go.
