2022 Explorer Limited
Hi guys. I just got an used 2022 Explorer Limited, and as you can see, the gear knob (or shifter) is showing some scratches (I think that´s what it is). I don´t know if I can use any kind of plastic polish to remove it (if it´s safe to use it here) or if I need to replace the whole part.

Does any of you had this problem before and can help? Thanks!

It almost looks like it is maybe some adhesive residue. If you run a fingernail over it, does it feel soft there? Perhaps the previous owner had a sticker or one of those goofy "bling" rings there. I'd try a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a rag or Q-Tip in a small spot and see if it looks any better.

If it turns out that it is scratches, using a plastic polish sparingly there wouldn't hurt anything, just don't go globbing it all over the center "L" button as it may work it's way into the switch.

Congratulations on the new ride!

Chris

Welcome to the Forum.
Chris has some good advice. Start out slowly and sparingly with whatever you do. I don't even know where you would find that part. I did a quick search on the Levittown Ford site and came up empty. Perhaps your dealer would know if you can easily replace it.
Good luck.

Thanks Chris. It doesn´t seem adhesive residue (I´ve tried to remove it using my fingernail and it´s still there). I´ll try some isopropyl alcohol as well, just in case. And yes, I was considering to use plastic polish products like PlastX. Maybe will get some tonight and try. The car itself is in a pretty good condition except by that part. Thanks for the advice.

I´ll share some pictures of the car as soon as possible.

Thanks Peter! Yes, replace that part wouldn´t be easy. I found some used parts at Ebay, but I´m not into buying those used parts to place it here. Hope I can remove the scratches (or part of them). I´ll try and come back with the results.

Thank you guys!

Well, I´ve tried isopropyl alcohol and plastic polish yesterday, no success :(.

It´s so annoying to have a well maintained car with this problem. I´ll keep trying to remove it somehow and if I get any good result I come back and post.

Thank you!

It looks like it may have been burned or melted somehow. Maybe a smoker drove that before?

No idea. Car doesn´t smell like someone had smoke inside before, but I can´t confirm 100%. Sometimes it seems that the plastic is damaged from inside than from outside. It´s just annoying as I said. If I could at least disassembly this piece than I could confirm what is happening.

Go back where you bought it and ask them to do something about it. They should've detailed and reconditioned the vehicle inside and out before selling it to you. You probably have several days after purchase where you can go back and complain about cosmetic issues.

order a new one

see below

Thanks for finding it. I don't see a picture of it but going by the part number L1MZ-7D246-S, and if ordering, Fordparts is the most expensive place to shop. The same part is $16.21 cheaper at Levittown. Original Cable Assembly Selector Lever Con L1MZ-7D246-S | Levittown Ford Parts

I don't think the above is correct

I offered the information as a starting point only. The Vin number should be entered. My first post was a link to a shift cable .......the selector ....has a different number but was shown in that link so i posted it.

use that link then go to related parts to find the selector. If a cup holder is a left and right nut to replace this should be interesting to how much they want to replace it.

Sorry about that. I did find it on the Levittown site at $62.29 less than Fordparts.
Now the issue would be, how easily is the part removed/changed?
Thanks again.

Peter

Thanks guys for all the help provided.

I don´t think dealer will assume the cost. It´s an used car, and usually, take it as it is. I could manage to have them doing a body shop work on the rear bumper, but for sure they will not assume the gear shifter.

I´ll check if it makes sense to change the selector or not. It should not be so difficult. I saw some videos on how to remove the center console, and doing so, there is an access to the gear selector.
