23 Explorer PIU 3.0 Turbo
Hello everyone, I recently picked up this gem. It's a 2023 PIU that has been decommissioned with the twin turbo!

It was not decommissioned for this issue. It was decommissioned due to an accident which has already been fixed. The place it was decommissioned at the state garage is not friendly nor will help.

However, it has been a nightmare trying to figure out this issue it has. I have been to two different mechanics and I have it scheduled with a local PIU radio installed shop, but they can't get to it until August 2nd. The last mechanic it was at said it is just not communicating with the SCCM properly but nothing in the system is showing up.

Everything but the horn and the wipers on high is dead on the steering wheel (turn signals, rear wiper, high beam, all buttons on steering wheel). Also, only the 3rd brake light works when the brakes are pressed. The interior lights do work on the steering wheel. Nothing seems to be cut/ added into the column wiring harness. The hazard lights do work when pressed.

It is not the steering wheel control module (SCCM) nor the steering wheel. They have both been replaced and reprogrammed to the vehicle.

I feel like there is a module or a wiring harness missing that they pulled when it was decommissioned. Just a guess.

I attached pictures of some open connectors in the console area and other wire harnesses that are open in the back area.

Any help on this would be appreciated. If someone can point me to what is missing and it fixes it I will PayPal, Cash App, or Venmo you $150 bucks.

Without seeing your PIU in person and being able to test, my only advice is to check all the fuses on the BCM. I was going to say maybe your clock spring had a break but your wipers work in high speed.

Just from what you said wasn’t working, all those items are powered by the BCM. I would compare the fuses to the fuse label in an owners manual, and make sure the BCM is sending power to the fuse or not blown.

You mention the BCM. A person can try resetting that. All you need to do is disconnect the battery cables and touch them together to dicharge any remaining current. Then hook them back up and see if it helps.

Also, all those connectors up front our basically outputs and shouldn’t effect anything if unplugged. The horn ring circuit in one picture (second to last picture green/white wires) looks like it’s looped back. So your horn should work if you can figure out the other issue. The other stuff in the back is aftermarket wiring from previous lighting.

Thank you for the reply. I did already check all fuses individually with a Ohm meter - continuity and did leave the battery cable off over night and I pressed the brake several times while it was disconnected.

The BCM was also reset at the last mechanic via their system. It had all of the default setting loaded to the system and it didn't change anything.

The mechanic said it is very strange. He felt there was a module or harness that was keeping it from completing the circuit.

I did hookup for-scan and got these codes - C0052 ~ C0055 in the TRM.

I did find this online but I don't know how to troubleshoot this, if this is actually related. - attached

Yes, the horn does work. I put that circuit back together and it started working.

Just to confirm the gray connector on the picture attached should not be plugged up to anything? According to the wiring diagram it does have some affect on the brake lights and steering wheel controls.

I am a few years out of the loop but the rear stop lights should be strobe/LED with the typical double flash when applied with various flash patterns programmable. Manufacturer name might be on the tail light bulbs.

That is the 14way gray connector. All those are outputs. If you have the other end of that connector, it’s just a connector with about 8”s of wire that you can tap into. The steering wheel Aux ground outputs 1 through 4 are on that connector too.

Update: Found the issue at local shop with an Ford FRS tool. This cap was missing out of the front passenger side floorboard. This is the tie in for the hot key buttons on the steering wheel.
