- 2001 sport 4 x 4
Well troops, I'm an explorer owner again. I sold my 97 f150 std. cab stepside 4 x 4, flew to Detroit, picked up a loaded 2001 sport 4 x 4 with 36,000 miles at Russ Milne Ford, (found it in Autotrader). Before the f150 I had a 95 Explorer Expedition 4 x 4. For whatever it's worth, I paid $14,900 for the truck.
My fiance and I drove the explorer back to LA in 2 1/2 days. I checked the oil, antifreeze, and tires regularily (the truck already had 255/70 Goodyear RTS's, the Firestones had been destroyed, I kept the RTS's at 40 psi for a little firmer handling and maybe a bit better gas mileage). Long story short, everything went great, the truck ran perfect, very comfortable at 80+ mph.
What did I learn? First, that it was hotter than hell in Iowa, Nebraska, east Colorado, and the deserts of Nevada and California. The digital temp. gauge was at about 104 through all of the midwest, and 110 in the desert. If any of you have never been on I-70 west out of Denver, I strongly recommend it. I had never seen that part of the country and it's incredibly beautiful. It didn't really cool down until I got back out to the westside of LA.
Regarding the truck, if anyone's considering a 2001 or later sport, I say go for it. The small size is perfect for the little lady and I, and our two 11 year old German Shepards. The 4.0 sohc v6 ran great, it was a pleasure to be able to haul up most hills without the engine downshifting, like my 4.6 v8 f150 always had to.
I'll be doing a few minor modifications, but it'll stay mostly as it is for now, good enough for some mild off roading, and quick and comfortable enough to get me and my stuff where I'm going.
