well, not entirely... had to drive back to DC from cleveland on sunday with bearings that were just starting to go bad. by the end of the trip, it was super loud and left turns were treacherous. the wheel finally seized up less than 10 miles from home :(

i guess when it finally broke it took the axle, the hub, the emergency brake and i'm not sure what else with it. Curry's in Falls Church called me yesterday with a $2000 estimate. ugh. that seems REALLY high, even with all the damage. any one else think so?

I know that in the past (with another vehicle), a busted bearing on a single wheel cost me upwards of $500 for just that. With axle, hub, and e-brake damage, I can't say that the estimate is unreasonable. Sorry.

wow, that does seem high. Take a picture of the damage. The new bearings should cost 155.55,15.99 for a rear e brake kit. I couldnt find the cost of the halfshaft but i would put max of 200 bucks. This is from rockauto.com by the way. The rest i guess would be labor. Take it somewhere else and have them look at it.

thanks for the info guys. i would love to get a 2nd opinion, but that would mean getting it towed again. i do trust these guys, and i know they can be pricey, i was just wondering if that price was totally unreasonable. after BUMmedic's response i guess it's not.

my other issue is the cause of this problem. when i had Just Tires install my Bridgestones 2 years ago, they sent me out of the shop without the axle nut on this same wheel. i put about 15 miles on it before the wheel started coming off the splines and making noise. they towed me back in, found the nut on the floor, reinstalled it, promised it wouldn't affect anything and sent me on my way.

everyone i've talked to says that this is very early for wheel bearing failure and i think it's an awful big coincedence that this is the same wheel they left the nut off of.

i'm going to start gathering my documentation (scarce) and i might write some letters. does anyone think i have a snowball's chance in hell of getting help from them?
