what is the recommended torque on the axle nut on a 2wd front axle nut(2003 Sport Trac)?

Are you referring to the "spindle"/"front hub adjusting"/"castle" nut?
If so,
1)Tighten the nut to 21 lb-ft while rotating the rotor in the opposite direction.
2)Back the nut off half a turn.
3)Re-tighten the nut to 17 lb/inch while turning the rotor in the same direction you are tightening.(basically finger tight)
4)Install retainer and cotter pin(bend it back). If cotter pin doesn't line up. Don't turn the nut. Remove retainer and try in a different position.
5) Install grease cap
5)Install tire. Grab it and move in and out to check for play.
