I have 373's and a 5.0 sitting on 32's. It's not good I'm going to 410's soon.
32's and 355's are doable but you probably won't like it.

so for 32's 4.10 would be the ideal?

Yeah 32's with a 4.10 ratio would be pretty ideal. I ran 35's with 3.73's for about a year. Wasnt to bad, just dont expect great gas mileage.

4.10 would be good

i want to thank all you guys for your help. what would be the major set back for that set up i do mostly highway driving. but would it be bad to get the tires and run it like that for a while until i have money to regear i want to look into putting in a locker or a limited slip so i would probably put both in at the same time. would running 31's intead of 32's make a difference.

Its really not gonna be that bad, Your speedometer will be off a little. Other then that youll just lose a little power.

Yeah I have that combo...not too bad as far as acceleration, but what can you expect from the OHV anyway. Gas milage is down maybe 1mpg at the most for me.

I'm running 3.55s and 31s and i am pretty fine with that....i never had good gas mileage to begin with, and i didnt loose but maybe 11-15 miles per tank (not much). You should really be OK with the setup...its not going to be fast, but you cant expect much from the Explorer anyway. I say go with the bigger tires, you will wish you went bigger later anyway.

PETE99X: do you have an automatic or a stick? Most Explorers are autos but just figured I'd ask. If you have a stick you can get by a lot better because of the lower first gear.

Also, what engine do you have? The SOHC and V8 will take it better then the OHV 4.0 because of the better power. My EB with a V8 has 32s and 3.73s and does fine.

I've got 3.73s, 35s and a stick in my Sport Trac. Its not speed demon by any means but it can easily get out of its own way and keep up with traffic. Around town the mileage isn't great but I get 18+ on the highway :D

whats the stock gear ratio? on a 2000 XLT

I have 32's and 4.56s, but that is another story. I had 34's(295/75/16) on my '95 EB with 3.73s and it had no problem keeping up with traffic:). I dont see a problem with 3.55s and 32's...this will make your mileage around town worse, but depending on the tire, it could make hwy mileage better.

thanks to everyone i should have been more specific i have the 4.0 sohc and an automatic yeah a good 90% of my driving is highway and my 4 wheeling is mainly mudding and sand so im not really that worried about the low end torque like i would be if i was rock crawling or something. i will probably regear eventually anyways but im seventeen with a part time job so money saves up slow.

so i guess the best thing to do would be just get the lift and tires and see what my performance/mileage is. then go from there

thats what i would do

Gears are a lot of money just to go out and do before you know what its going to be like with out them. Try it first. If ya can't stand it, get the gears. I'm guessin that you won't mind the difference, and will quickly get used to it.
