my nearly finished project is in dire need of exhaust. My original plan was to do dual exhaust with turnouts in front of the rear tire, but i am getting sick of not driving the beast and cash is dwindling. I have a late 70s 351 windsor with manifolds, and thats it right not. Its loud as hell right now and i want to quite it down so i can drive it. I can get a new flowmaster from a buddy for 50 bucks, its a 40 series. the only problem is it is 2.5" in and out. I am thinking i will bring the exhaust together on the passengers side, take it back about 2-3 feet then put the flowmaster on, and a turndown after that. Keep in mind this will be all done in 2.5" exhaust tubing. im thinking the 2.5" will be slightly on the small side but the engine should be very tourquey, correct? how do you all feel about this????

im intrested in what your x looks like underneith the hood...

you got pictures of the fit of the 351w? like the steering clearence, the motor mounts and the exhaust?

i dont have any answers for your exhast problem, sounds like what you got in mind is as good as my guess

2.5 for a stock 351 is fine. Most old V8's came with 2.25 stock.

:chug: :chug:

If you want it quieter, a Flowmaster 40 series will not be quiet. Flow40 with a 351W would be pretty loud. Mean sounding though! Especially duals, that would be really loud.

If it were me, I would go with a Flow50 and a single 3" out, unless you really want your dog to hear you coming home from a mile away.

unless you really want your dog to hear you coming home from a mile away.

Yeah man! your dog would love you for that!

i will get pics pretty soon, ill try tomorrow. Its up at the shop right now. I dont care about sound really, i mean how loud it is. I deff. want a flowmaster rumble though. As far as the fit went, it isn't all that tight. Steering is pretty close but everything else (except exhaust) has cleared fine. BTW i do have a 3 inch body lift also, that helps. I was going to run headers, but there was no way they would fit, it is pretty tight by the exhaust ports.

am I understanding correctly you are putting a 351w in your Explorer ?

Friggin' cool !!!!!!!

Yeah, and I just noticed it's carbed. Sweet. That will sound tough as nails with a Flowmaster and the right cam.

i started a thread with a bunch of pics of my rig.... my pics

 I think you have just done what every member on this board with a 4l would like to do if they had the time, skills, money and patience.
