hello,

I change the diff oel in the rear diff last week. I used 75w140 castrol synthetic diff oel. in the owners manuel is marked that you should use a friction modifier xl-7. I this correct? If yes, from where I can get these modifier / or some simular?
(The Explorer has not the advance trac), but 4x4.

thx, tom

friction modifier should be available from any auto parts store.

not here in germany ... ;-)
still looking about it. because, the reason for the question about an equivalent to the xl-7 / xl-3 or cm-19546-a1 fm.

thx, tom

Read the bottle because most synthetic oil already meets the specifications and does not require friction modifier.

i found a us car shop in germany zhey sell some ford racing friction modifier that fits to the xp.
the castrol diff oel I used has no ls or fm inside. there some diff oels they have it inside (liquid moly ls diff oel, etc.).

thx for help, tom

RockAuto.com seems to have the XL-3 ($4.15). Go to the site and do a Part Number Search for "xl3".

i am not realy sure. it is an 2004 xlt with 4x4, but no advance trac.
(4x4 auto, 4x4 high, 4x4 low > setting).

thx, tom

Tom, only the limited slip diffs require friction modifier.

There are several ways to check if you have a limited slip diff.

You can check the tag on the inside edge of the driver's door for the axle code. Post it here and we can tell you what it means.

you can also look at the diff and find the metal tag that is attached to one of the bolts on the cover, it also has a code, and again you can post what that says and we can help you figure it out.

Lastly, you can jack up the rear end of the truck so both tires are in the air and put the transmission in neutral (engine off) Spin one of the tires. If they both turn in the same direction, you have a limited slip diff. If they turn in opposite directions, then you have an open differential.

hey,

good idea. will take a look at the door Information, maybe at the diff tag.
until later. still working at the office and waiting to go in the weekend soon ;-).

thx, tom

I was taking a look in to the tag in the drivers door.
I found following discription about axle .... axle: d4

is this correct?

thx, tom

tom, axle code d4 means you has a 3.73 gear ratio with a limited slip differential

-_- okay james..... you win... lol

you seriously got me by like 10 seconds

great! thanks a lot.
I ordert already a bottle of these fm stuff. hope it works.

got that evening an other problem. tryted to change the sparg plugs. done 5 of 6. one sparg plug hole is damaged (I guess it was before is well). so I have to go to a tool shop tomorrow morning to get a die (?) to cute the inner srew(?).

Hey sorry to revive an old thread... but...

I have '03 (2wd) Explorer with a limited slip differential. I actually just purchased the vehicle from a friend, who had changed the rear end twice before due to the noise. The differential that is currently on the car has <10k miles, and it is making the noise.

Will the noise go away if I change the fluid to a good synthetic (I've got some Mobil in my garage) and add the friction modifier, or do I need to replace the rear end?

Thanks,

Ted

A bottle of Motorcraft friction modifier is still only $6.33 at the dealer

noise? unless its grinding just turn your music up louder or put some exhaust on XD
