Hi

I am butting in a bit here as I don't have an Explorer but I want to get some information.

I am in the UK and I have a Sierra XR4x4 and I want to fit the 4.0. I believe that the V6 4.0 OHV engine is basically the same (externally) as my V6 2.9 OHV Cologne engine. Can anyone verify this? Does anyone have any pictures of the engine that they can email me?

Any information would be great

thanks
Robert

Same engine bored and stroked over though. :) At least that is what I have been told. I don't have any good pics however mine all turn out blury.

I can't comment on the engine, but I must say, sure is a cool lookin lil car...I like it a helluva lot more than the escort or anything! Looks sweet!

The same

I am 90% sure they are the same as far as bellhousing, and physical size, some of the exhaust bolts flanges, accessory drives, and flywheels may be different.

Sven at http://www.vanirtech.com/index.html will know for sure, he is the cologne expert. He also has a book out on the Cologne V-6 its on his site or you can get it through one of the online book sellers

Good luck looks good.

I'm tearing down a 4.0 right now and taking pics, let me know what you want pics of and where you want me to email them to.

Thanks for the info, just checked out the site and sent him an e-mail. I think I'll be investing in that book!

Primarily the pics I want are the rear engine to bell housing, cylinder head to exhaust, but all pictures will be gratefully received! Please send whatever you can to robert@area51.org.uk

thanks again

Robert,

The 4.0 OHV and 2.9 OHV are phisically identical. I just completed a 2.9L to 4.0L swap on a BroncoII. Even though I used the tranny from the 4.0L, the 2.9L tranny would have bolted up to the 4.0L. Check the flywheels. I know that there are differences between the 2.9L and 4.0L flywheels. If you keep your 2.9L tranny, you may have to use the 2.9L flywheel and starter. Good Luck!

Is your Sierra XR4x4 similar to an XR4TI? Looks like the same chassis.

ok if he's got a twin turbo 2.9 why the hell can't I just have a single turbo 4.0?? would the manifolds from that car swap over?

I have never actually seen the XR4Ti, but I would have thought that the turbo and manifolds should just bolt on! Presumably you would need to upgrade the ecu or use the one from the XR4Ti for fueling?

UPDATE: Forget that, it's rubbish!! I thought the XR4Ti was a 2.3 V6, I have found out that it is only a 4 pot so the manifolds have no chance of fitting!! We only have a 2.0 4 pot and a 2.3 V6 over here....... my plan is to bolt the twin turbos onto the 4.0 :D
