1994 ranger 4.0 splash
hi i got a 94 ranger splash 4by4 5 speed.i just pulled the motor out it ran fine no check engine lights or anything wrong with it just used oil.i put a new long block in,i used all my old eternal parts (they were in good shape) got the new motor started up ran for 30 minutes broke in.now the problem,i idle about 750 rpms its got to be feathered to get rpms up,only goes 15 mph.is there a wire or fuse that you pull to reset the timing back to base timing?there is no cam positioning sensor only a plug the shops here wont give advice.there is no check engine light on ,only when i unplug different sensors.the engine gets hot, the exaust is hot more than normal i have a feelin the shop put the timing chain in wrong oh new plugs, wires and maf thank you so much for the help im lost!

Just sounds like a bad Throttle position sensor to me.

Maybe a large vacuum leak.

Or possibly throttle linkage, throttle body installed/adjusted incorrectly.

To reset the electronics just disconnect the battery.

The spark timing PIP is received from the crank position sensor.

The only timing adjustment on the 4.0 is the Octane Shorting Bar, it's a little grey plug near the EEC-IV test harness, normally by the power distribution box on the passenger side.

I believe it advances timing 3 degrees, something like that. Everything else is done in the computer. As far as I know, there's no way to set base timing, it's just sensors and the computer. In other engines, you'd remove the same plug, set base timing and then pop the plug back in. On the 4.0, that harness is 'extra' for the most part.
