95 Ranger XLT
1995 ranger 2.3L. I have a octane ping and the timing is 28deg advance at idle and 32 deg advance at higher rpm; what would cause the timing to be so high? I have changed the MAF; both exhaust sensors; egr valve and DPFE sensor; ECT sensor. I have pressure canister cleaned the injectors and decarboned the motor. None of the above cured the octane ping then someone asked what the timing was set at and I replied it isn't adjustable but checked it anyways to find it way advanced.

When was the timing belt replaced? It may have been installed without the components properly aligned.

I realize the post is outdated, I had this same issue and worked at solving it for over two years until the timing advance that was identical to his problem ended up snapping a ring and I had to replace the motor. While removing the bad motor I found buried under the AC compressor and PS pump was a cam position sensor (The only thing I hadn't checked) They are rare to find on a ranger except in California. I researched the vin way back and confirmed it wasn't from Ca. so I didn't think it had one. Some have said the majority of the time a good cleaning of the sensor cures this problem but I feel if your into that much work to get to it replace it. I did replace it with the rebuilt LB and it runs fine now. The cam sensor will affect the timing.
