Wow, all I can say is wow. What a Sh$#y design. It's hard enough getting the two bolts out never mind the god for saken wires. I got the two bolts off in about 20 minutes. The large power wire took me about 2 hours.
I don't know if it is like this on all explorers but there is essentially no slack on the main power wire. It would move a couple of inches and that was it. No matter which way I moved it I could not get enough space to get a tool on it. If I twisted one way the starter too much the main wire would bend over the nut blocking the tool and if I twisted the other way there was not enough room/angle for the tool.
I finally managed to get it by pushing enough that I got the starter to stand essentialy vertical which gave me a better angle at the nut. I got the air-ratchet-extension-socket combo near and finally magyvered the starter so that the tool quickly slipped in.
What were they thinking putting the starter in such a unreachable position, placing the solenoid on top so you can't access it, then not giving enough wire to get the thing out.
oh and when I think i broke my finger taking the front drive shaft off. Had to pry the ******* off and when it came my finger smashed the exhaust pipe.
/end rant
