found a great buy on a 91 explorer with 4.0 in it.wanting to get it off road, engine has 160,000 on it seems strong, is this too high of miles to begin with? and is there any one who has one going strong at that high of mileage?

Several members here have over 200K miles on the OHV V6. They are pretty reliable workhorse engines.

I agree, over 200K is common. My first car was a 91 that I got as a hand me down with 210K on it. I drove it until it had 235K, and it still ran, but I got a 92 with 189K, which now has 215K. Both now have reman trannys in them though.

Went 290k on one in my 92... The lower end seems to hold up well if properly maintained but the heads on the 93.5 and earlier are rumored to crack easily if over heated. Also the valve train area tends to wear the worst of anything from what I've seen.

going on over 200K on my 92. Been mine the entire time and well cared for... I see the lack of power on long uphills in the Sierra, but it is doing well and still passes smog with rom to spare. Trannie is orig too.

Happy exploring

Chris

171,000 miles here and original tranny. I still tow two jet skis every once in a while. Low end still seems fine. Seems the top end is slowing though on some long uphill climbs.

You could probably easily get another 50k miles out of it w/o having major issues, but you never know. Maintanence.
