I'm thinking about dropping a 302 in my 01 Explorer when the 4.0 V-6 goes bad.

If anyone knows what is required to make this happen please let me know.

I know i have to change the transmission, and driveshaft, and either reprogram the computer, or get a different one (possibly from an F-150?).

I have 3.73 rear gears in front and rear axles. It is 4WD. Currently has an automatic Transmission, but I am going to change it to a manual (T-5).

But other than that I don't know.

Let me know what all needs to be done, if I need a new K-Member, motor mounts, anything else, etc. I'm gonna start saving money to put together an engine...I already have a nice 302 block, just need to know what and how to do this.

4.0 V-6 currently has 99, 775 miles on it. I want an off-road playtoy, that will tear some stuff up!!!!!

Thanks

Andrew

Do a search. This question has been asked 10,000 times before. There are even writeups on it as well.

2001 model was available with a 5.0L V8 so basically you:
purchased donor vehicle
Park next to your V6
remove V6, from radiator to drivesahfts, replace with V8 from radiator to driveshafts.

Address the computer key fob (PATS) issue, start, run and drive it.

but yeah Search and good luck!

If that's the OHV, it could take YEARS and YEARS before you "wear it out" and are forced to replace it :)

the SOCH will last a good long time too, just not as proven yet.
Its all about how you care for them IMO
but yeah teh friggin OHV 4.0L is like the biggest work horse Ford made, it just keeps on going and going and going....
