1996 4.0 Explorer XLT
I recently purchased one of those cold air intakes off of eBay. I saw the Mac one on here, mighta been a better idea.

Problem is, I now have a 96' 4.0 with the MAF sensor in the filter cylinder. The filter setup calls for the square type inline MAF sensor, like I had on my Gen 1 Explorers. I realize now that I probably will need to purchase a newer (maybe 98') MAF sensor to get it all to work, being as the intake came with the hookups but not the sensor.

My question is: do they make a connector for the different MAF sensors or am I going to have to splice wires? I vaguely remember my older x's having a white connector somewhere on there like my 96' does but not sure.

Either way, anyone have any advice on how to remedy this? Besides go buy the mac one? lol. I'm already assuming I'll most likely have to run to the junkyard and grab one with the wire harness attached.

Thanks in advance.

The intake you bought for which year/model was built for?
Usually you just can´t use another year´s MAF sensor but the one that your truck came with. There are several things to consider: voltage, air temp sensor and calibration, etc.

I bought the year of my vehicle a 1996 Explorer XLT Cold Air Intake Kit.

I was under the impression that I could use different year MAF sensors, as long as it's for the same engine model. I've always had the Ford 4.0L (235cid?), and they've pretty much all been identical. Exceptions being in the air filter set up and serpentine pulley system set up.

Oh, I was looking through posts on the site here, and found a cold air filter made by "Mac" I only looked real quick. It was @$170 and came with the in line "square type" MAF sensor. As an after thought I went and re-checked and the Mac filter was for the 5.0L.

I've posted on other sites and made some calls to the dealership, and pretty much was told I can swap the MAF sensors in my situation, I just need a wire harness that you can't buy in the store so it's off to the junkyard I go.

I originally just wondered if anyone else had this problem, because I have a 1996 4.0 and it has the MAF sensor built into the air filter casing, and every Cold Air Kit I found was for the inline MAF sensor. I guess there's a possibility that the someone changed it before I bought it. It had a front end collision at one point, maybe they just used what they had on hand. For now, I guess I'm going to leave it alone.

Thanks!

Could you take a couple of pictures of your actual MAF and harness connector and the MAF port of the intake you just bought?

I may be able to find something for you or at least point you in the right direction.

The actual MAF sensor housing is attached to the inside of the cylinder air filter housing. What is pictured on the mac site is just the MAF housing. You should be able to remove the housing from the air filter box, thus being able to use a air intake kit.
