I am in process of rebuilding my 4.0l with an eye towards performance and found a book titled "How to build and modify Ford 60* V-6 Engines". I got mine from Amazon in a couple of days but after I got it found it was avail. from Vanir. Why? Because it was written by Sven Pruett from Vanir.
It is a good reference for anyone who is going to rebuild the 4.0l. It was written in 94 so it is not super current- basically no mention of the FI systems we have, but the 4.0l is discussed at all phases of an engine build. It covers all of the v-6 2.6,2.8,2.9 and 4.0. Good recommendations on machining and what to do, alot of steering to Vanir, but good information. The only real weakness is that carburetors are covered in detail and the FI system is written off as complicated and expensive, if an update was made which covered all of the TB, MAF and intake work that is now avail the book would be perfect. Still a good source for building a 4 liter.
