4.0L OHV Cylinder Heads questions

Yes I obviously read your posts, since I've been trying to find answers to the same questions.
That is how I came to find this page from Engine Quest.
I am merely affirming what you said, and added this to support you.
Hopefully also to help other people who are going through the same trouble as I have been looking for the correct heads.
I can neither affirm or deny the quality of the heads, but they do at least understand that there are different heads between 95-01, unlike many other retailers.
This page has lots of good info.. and some pics that will help.

I didnt mean any offensive by that, just didnt know if you saw them.yea big difference. Ive used and installed them on a couple motors.great heads, flow more and a great company.

On a related topic, does this mean I can put 95TM heads on a 90tm block and produce higher compression? Or will I hear the nasty sounds of valves slapping pistons?

Direct bolt on and the heads increase compression by smaller combustion chambers, has nothing to do with valves.you need high octang gas tho 90+

Good to know. Thanks.

What are the benefits of this?

Too raise compression. More power, more efficient

Is it worth it on a daily driven vehicle? I spend roughly about $600 a month in gas as a satellite technician. I think I read you had to use premium gas.

Yes and no.yes you have to use 90+ gas.you may see an increase in gas mpg but the extra cost of 90+ gas offsets it.you do gain some power though. I would say if your replacing them anyways and can afford 90+ gas then yes its worth it,just remember big pic.also stock is 9:1 for first gens and the new explorers are 9.8:1 stock but are tuned so 90+ gas is not needed, this mod will take you to 10:1

Well I must replace my heads cylinder #1 has lost all compression. Just trying to make the best decision since I need to order them. What kind of mileage do you get?

I wouldnt use my truck as an example. I get around 14city and 18-19highway but again my truck is FAR from stock.should be about a 10% increase in power and efficiency.its not drastic for a stock motor bit when you have a built motor with a cam,it makes a much larger difference, this is why most people do it or for the power.most people with stock motors just go with a stock cast head.if you search on here in the for sale section you will find a link to the cheapest place to get the heads.thread is called "new 95tm heads" also if you do decide to use 95tms you have to go with the heads from engine quest, they are the only true 95tm heads you want in stock form

Well I guess I will just stay with the stock heads. What differences are there between the EQ heads vs. Alabama Cylinder Heads? What needs to be bought if a bare head is bought? Thanks for all the information and help.

Nothing if you go with a stock 93tm head.its the 95tm that is different. alabama doesnt carry a true 95tm head. alabama sells complete 93tm heads,if you wanted to use your own valves or custom valves and springs you would want to go with engine quest

Okay so they are both high quality aftermarket heads? Anyone ordered from Alabama? Can't seem to find anything about their shipping prices.

Ok has anyone used MAHLE heads? I have a set of them on my 92 4.0 ohv v6, I ordered a eng put it in company said put rv cam in it, but it was stock, so I installed a 410 comp cam ordered the right push rods, after a little while started to clatter and smoke, so found valve guide seals were getting taged, so ordered comp cam dual valve springs and keepers, bird ported heads & shorten the valve guides & rebuilt heads, after that the eng still clatter so ordered another set of push rods 5.550, then after a while it smoked and clatter again, so pulled heads again had rebuilt found exhaust guides worn this time, so ordered rebuilt lifters did comp cam run out on valve train with adjustable push rod from smith bros. and ordered rebuit rocker arms with harden tips, the run out came up with 5.500 so I used the 5.550 again thinking would help with pre load on lifters. now about a year latter smokes and clattering again. any help or advise would be nice.
Thanks Bird for your help its been a long time & don't know if you remember me, I was the guy that was into the NHRA Jr dragsters and crewed them sent you pics.

Posting here as well in hopes of getting a definitive answer. Thanks.

Okay I've read every thread out here about the exhaust port differences between the 95tm stock head (with the 'U' stamp) and the new heads out there (98tm) with the SMALLER exhaust ports.

I ordered new heads from clearwater and I told them I have the larger ports style head (95tm), and of course they were delivered today and the new ones have the smaller exhaust ports (98tm).

I understand that the smaller ports were designed to increase exhaust gas speed and heat up the cat quicker for cold-start emissions improvement.

My question, which I haven't read fully/definitively answered in the other threads is:

If I put these heads on my 96 4.0 Engine, will there be problems or performance issues? I am just looking for a reliable, well running truck again, but I do not want to install these if there will be noticable side effects to the engine peformance.

Other threads say 'probably not a good idea' to use the 98tm heads, but my thought is did Ford change the OHV engine in other ways after these heads were released to production so that the 96 4.0 engine would not perform correctly with these heads?

Anyone with some concrete opinions on this? Would like to complete his job this weekend unless there is a strong reason to return these heads.

Thanks, Jon

Bump for an answer, cause I'm in the same boat.

They make true 95tm heads, engine quest makes them.if you use a 98 on a 95 it "could" overheat your cats.personally i dont think it would mke a difference at all,you may feel a "slight" power loss.i doubt anything was changed ecm wise, just to small of a difference on a stock motor.
