I have 2001 Explorer 4.0l SOHC that has a squeaky noise that follows engine RPM. I can't really hear it when standing in front with the hood up. I have removed the serpentine belt and the noise is still present. It sounds loadest when listening underneth from behind front tires. Any ideas?

Anyone? Sounds like a dry pulley bearing but squeak still there with the belt removed.

harmonic balancer?

It could be something associated with the harmonic balancer. Try listening to it with a section of flexible hose. Something may be caught between the balancer and the block. Don't let the engine run more than a minute without the water pump spinning.

Don't think it's the balancer. Squeak coming more from back of engine. Could it be the trans fluid pump? Any Transmission experts out there? What does a clogged Trans filter sound like? It seems to run fine other than the squeak. Just to reiterate it is engine RPM related not vehicle speed. It will squeak in any gear including Park.
