Hello Explorer experts, I have a question for you about tire size & gears.I have my '01 Sport Trac that has the SOHC engine,5 spd.automatic,2WD & 4.10 LS axle.I was checking out the gear calculator on 4Lo.com & it showed that with the bigger tires (33s),I wind up with equal to a 3.73 gear instead of 4.10. My question is this: How much power/torque have I sacrificed for the bigger meats? If it's a lot I'm thinkin' of going back to my 265/75-16s.(BTW the stock tires were Firestone 255/70-16s) The truck seems powerfull enough with the 33s,But hey, The faster the better.Beleive it or not I actually do have people pick races with me,Usually other trucks or junked out ol'"hot rods" My son pointed out the fact that I've had more little street races with the Explorer ST than I had in my 96 Mark VIII (290 hp,0-60 in 7.1)!The stock 0-60 for a ST 2WD w/4.10 is 8.4 (9.5 for the 4x4,beleive it or not)Not exactly a screamer by any means, but not doggy feelin either.I just wonder how the bigger tires have affected that number.I thought maybe some of you guys might be able to shed some insight on the subject---Thanks

hey shab, 3.73 aint bad. if you look at a lot of musclecars from the 60-70s a lot of guys run a 3.55 or 3.73. i have a 3.73 and a 160 horse ohv but i still have put a couple stangs and firechickens to pasture

3.73 is still a good ratio. Hey, I only have 3.27 gearing and I don't have any problems racing. Of course my mods don't hurt, either. With the engine stock, my launches left much to be desired. After I hopped the engine up a bit, though, the 3.27's were no problem. I like my low hwy RPMs, too.

shabbadoobie, remember that many if not most of the newer explorers come with 3.73 standard. Thinking on the positive side, you'll get better gas mileage.
