4.6 Exhaust Question?

Wow, i assumed all v8's had 2.5 " piping.

****....even my v6 mustang has 2.5" True Duals, although it's custom.
I didnt really lose any noticable back pressure.

Now that i think about it, the stock v8 SUV's DO look like they only have 2.25" piping.
Damn, i bet you could get some killer high end flow if you ran a custom 2.50" Dual setup with some Flowmaster 40's.

Damnit, now im not happy with my exhaust setup, i want ####ing 2.5's now.....****!
2.25" is pathetic for a v8, even a small one like the 4.6L.

And my muffler guy got locked up or had to shut down shop, so now im SOL and need a new muffler guy.

2.5 are hard to fit over the rear end....ive got 2.5 true dual on mine and it took the exhaust shop about 4 hours to get it done...the rear left is easy the rear right is a pain in the ass.

if you take a look under your truck you will see how low the frame rails are that you would have to go under if your exited in front of the tire. i would get rid of the spare and run duals out the back

no need to get rid of the spare...i have duals and still have my spare in

Yesterday I emailed the tech dept. from Pypes Exhaust, located right near me in Hatfield, PA. They work with a lot of old and new American muscle, and from what I've heard on YouTube, they sound awesome. A lot like the vid I posted, nice and throaty at idle and low RPM's, and the above about 3500 it's got that nice V8 scream going. The best part is, they're good quality, but fairly inexpensive. Pair of hi-flow cats is about $150 and the mufflers are around $55 IIRC. I'll probably be going up to their shop this week hopefully to have them take a look at the X's undercarriage situation and see what they can do about a manifold-back system with X-pipe, two cats, two mufflers, and hopefully seeing if they can get two 2.5 pipes past the IRS. I'll keep you guys updated, I'm going to try to work a deal with them if I can get them some business from here if they keep the design. But of course you guys will want to hear them and see performance data first, lol. Their website is www.pypesexhaust.com, and there's a ton of vids on YouTube.

^^ Very interesting!! Keep us posted, I'd like to see what you find out.

I ditched the spare already, I didn't like how it looked hanging down on the back of the truck...

seanc11b do you have pics on this? i tried for a good 9 hours with the spare in there and i couldn't clear it without melting the carpet in the cab or the plastic on the tire guide did you run 2.25 or 2.5?

I have an '04 with true dual exhaust. We cut the pipes right after the first O2 sensor and ditched the factory Y-pipe and all 3 cats. Had the shop run new 2.25" pipes in the same fashion into a Flowmaster Delta 50 SUV dual-in dual-out muffler to tailpipes angling downward behind the rear tires on both sides. We tied up the second set of O2's and turned them off with an SCT tuner. It sounds pretty loud (but good) and I'm thinking I should've put in the 70 Series muffler instead. It's not obnoxious or anything but it does sound like a Cobra is pulling up and I pull up with my baby seat in the back. My wife and I laugh about it, midlife crisis thing going on.

you think 50's are to loud? im changing over to a true dual with super 44's... i hope its loud enough to make rice rockets implode :D.

Part of my vision for my explorer is those mufflers exited in the center of the bumper like the SRT8 Cherokee. I also want a full TF topend kit and some kind of mild forced induction.

If and when you do get that exhaust setup, be sure to post up clips as well!!!

How's Alaska? We got some rain that turned the road to ice, saw a car in the ditch and it's blowing like a **** out with a little bit of snow. Guess you'll have better luck next year making it to the strip.

i REALY like that look on the srt-8 cherokee. but because im a motorsports guy i need a tow hitch :P, so im stuck with a through the bumper deal. By this time next year me and my truck will be down in the states somewhere, and we can race head to head on a weekend for all i care lol. Yes forced induction is in my future as well. Ill be sure to post some video clips up of my new set up.

p.s. alaska has about 2.5 feet of snow atm, and i love to pull pruises out of the snow banks. as well as my arc nemesis's... chevys... All the people who traded their big pick ups and 4x4's are realy regretting it now, because everytime i pull some one out (happens once or twice a week after a snow fall), i make them listen to my you should have bought a ford speech lol.

MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL!!

After driving it for awhile I just ordered a Flowmaster 70 Series Big Block II Part # 524704 which should tone it down a bit. I'll try and get a sound clip of the before and after, 50 vs. 70 Series.

I have a question about that. I've heard both sides of the story, that your engine needs some backpressure, but also that the more flow you can get the better. So, which is it?

From my personal experience, I had cut the third cat off, ran a 3" pipe into a 40 series FM dumped. I noticed a lost of lowend, but gained a nicer pull on top. But it was WAY to loud and sounded to trucky. Took it the the shop, 2.5 exhaust put on all the way out the back with a 70 series FM and got my lowend back, still had the same top pull and it sounded much better.(quieter)

So they say when you go too big, you lose lowend torque, but gain a little topend. So it's about finding that balance with a NA motor. 2.5" is plenty for our NA motors and if you were going forced induction or had a wild H/C/I setup, I'd recommend stepping up to at least a 3".

Hmmm....so I guess dual 2.5's would have the same effect?
