4 Wheel Drive Problems...NO WORKY AT ALL!..(UPDATE!)

Okay,, guys this is my second biggest and final problems with the 92 XLT I bought a week ago,,(and remember this is my first explorer so be gentle on me:D )

I bought this 92 XLT a week ago, from the bank that reposessed it, and "AS IS" condition.

I am pretty happy as it is well taken care of inside and out, but the 4X4 does not work at ALL,,NO lights come on or anything when the 4X4 or the LOW RANGE buttons are pushed on the console.

I have checked all fuses, but other than that I KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT 4 wheel drive.

Can someone please give me some guidance on things to check, do, or rule out?..
I have the Haynes manual but it mentions nothing about troubleshooting 4X4.............

Thanks again guys,,,you all rock! :D

Did you take the dash panel off and make sure the wiring loom is plugged in?Does your ex have a after market radio?

The lights could be out on your dash panel or what not. This is how I would trouble shoot: Roll your windows down, put your truck in neutral, push the 4x4 hi button, roll forward SLOWLY a few meters, you should hear two clicks, one on either side, these clicks are the hubs engaging. If they don't engage you have a problem with your hubs. Do this in exact reverse order to disengage 4x4 mode. Next, I would go off-roading and see if your t-case is engaging. If it isn't then you've got problems, if it is, then your wiring is definitely off. Thats all I can think of...

No i havent taken off the dash,, and yes!! brad,, its got an aftermarket cd player.....!!

Sometimes when people install radio they forget to plug the wiring loom in for the 4x4 becase you have to unplug it to take the whole dash panel off.It is real easy to check just get your fingers in between the dash and the panel and pull out,do it right up by the switch for the 4x4 once you get it back far enough you will be able to see if its plugged in or not. This is a good place to start,my 92 had the same problem somebody installed a cd player and forgot to plug the switch back in:(

Hell no brad its not hooked up,,,,,,,well im out to the garage,, be back in a few!

Thanks BRO

-CHris

Plug it in and I wish you luck then do what VBVASploder said to do:D later Chris Brad in iowa

Okay,, brad,, vda,, im an idiot,,,,,,,,I pulled the dash off and it IS plugged in and did what you said VDA,, and no click or anything,, its like it isnt even hooked up at all,,,,,,,no lights, no power change,, no engaging at all,,,,,,,,,,

Any more idea's guys?
Like what fuse block powers the 4 wheel drive circuit,, or anything like that?

-Chris

I am not sure what fuse it is:( Someone on this board has too know:D

I checked my power distribution box and it looks like there is a 20 amp fuse for the shift moter for the 4x4 you might want to go out and check it.

Hey brad, which one is it from the front to the back of the box,,,,(your talking about the fuse box on the passenger side of the vehicle....right)

Yep its the only 20 amp in the box:D

LOL,, brad ive got like 3 of them that are 20's,, remember this is a used vehicle,, like they give a **** that the right fuse is in there,,lol

When you pull the distribution cover off look at the underside of it,it says elec. shift:D

LMAO,, BRAD there is NO COVER on it,,,,,,lol,,,,,,,,,,,,bro!,, damn your killing me,,LOL

Hold on a sec I will count them on mine:D

If you are standing in front of your ex it is the second one in it should be yellow in color:D

thanks bro,, brb

brad,, my 2nd one back is a 30 amp fuse,, and its okay anyway........
