You don't have the V8 1998 Explorer do you?

i have the v6 4.0 i just noticed it last week.. i dont think they come in AWD with the 6..

What are your options on your 4x4 switch?
Mine are Auto|4x4 Hi|4x4 Lo, which means that even in Auto you are still powering all 4 wheels. If that is the case then that would explain your observations. I don't know when they went from the 2WD/4WD option to the Auto/4WD option, but I think it was around '98.

On my 1995 Explorer I have 2WD -- 4WD AUTO -- 4WD Low. As for your 1998 I am not really sure what you have. But if you have the same set-up as I do then something has got to be wrong!

I'm pretty sure the '98 is Auto, 4-Hi & 4-Lo, so in auto if the system senses wheel spin, it will kick in the fronts (which actually are already getting power I believe when you first start until you hit 35mph or so).

This guy's correct. The "problem" you have isn't one at all. It's normal and its how the system is suposed to work.

well i guess i dont have a problem then... ok thanks for the input...
