This is an ongoing problem, first the symptom:

If I put it in 4x4 and then take it out the hubs stay locked. I know this because when I do a tight turn in a parkade, it starts to hop. It does eventually come out of this mode but can stay in for minutes, hours or days. I supect a pothole or a big jolt is what knocks it out.

I have changed the shift motor and I have changed both front hubs.

Still happens.

I also discovered today that when I go into 4x4, I am not getting 4x4 because I was pulling on a rope and only the back wheels were spinning.

I'm now at a loss?

check your speed sensors on the transfer case

FYI your hubs are always locked.

Has to be a t-case problem.

I have a similar problem, my 96' gets stuck in 4wd low and won't come out for days. 4wd auto is fine, no problem.

I can see from posts on here how to clean the speed sensors, but I have no idea what to do about the tcase... Anybody point me to a thread that'll give me some directions?

Thanks,
-Mike

Both of you need to run a search in the transmissions and transfer cases forum. Plenty of good information in there. :)

In the first case, it could be either a mechanical issue with the t-case, or it could be an electronic malfunction of the Control Trac system. There are plenty of threads on both.

In the second case, you're likely dealing with either a shift motor issue, or an electrical gremlin (i.e. sensor not functioning correctly, poor connection, missing input to the GEM, etc). Again, plenty of info in the correct forum.

Good luck!
