4 wheel drive won't engage.

Hey all, i have a 92 explorer. I had this handed down to me and want to get the 4x4 working. I beleive the tranfer case is fine, its either an electrical problem with the switch or a vacuum line, but i am not sure. I haven't really looked under there but if anyone know what the most common problem with the 4x4 in an explorer is i'd really like to hear what you suggest. thanks,

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the transmissions & transfer cases section. Check the auto hubs, and the shift motor. The sticky threads on the top of this section are loaded with information on 4WD.

is the shift motor hard to replace? can it be done in a day or a weekend? i have plenty of time. Also,,when the 4x4 button is pushed, the light wont' come on, can it still be the shift motor as well as a switch problem?

You should read the 4x4 troubleshooting guide in the 1st gen forum for lots of info and pics on diagnosing your 4x4 problem.
