I recently purchased 1994 XLT automatic & don`t know where to start in trying to find the workings of the 4x4 drive. Former owner has done tie rods, upper & lower ball joints, drive universals etc & claims that all worked when he parked it 12 months ago...this "EX" is other wise in excellent condition & I have no reason to disbelieve him. There are no lights at the buttons {hi / low} on front dash but the red light comes on at the relay reset [when reset] in the left rear compartment for the tire jack, etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated...tis the season here in "the great white north" that one really needs this...2` more snow last weekend....tia,,,[thanks in advance]...The dickster

Yeah you're doing this whole posting thing right. But while you wait for people to "chime" in, why not search and browse? Perhaps your questions have already been answered in some other thread. We have this entire sub-forum dedicated to transmissions, transfer cases and differentials - that would be a good start: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=109

Welcome to the site Dickster and Izwack!

Search for Shift Motor.

transfer case shift motor not working

if you are hearing the relay box trying to shift then the transfer case shift motor might be burnt out. its under the drivers door and is mounted to your transfer case. it looks like a larger windshield wiper motor and is realy easy to replace it has three bolts around the right side and one at the left. their is a wire harness and a plug that will come with the replacement and only one wire to cut and splice . the hard part is finding the replacment motor . check your local wreckers couse around my parts the thing cost 700.0 to 800.00 and is only avalible from a dealer. most wreckers charge between 80.00 to 180.00 depending on the area good luck.:salute:

am I doing this right..posting & all....haven`t done anything like this before

Welcome to the site.. Like anything new it will take some time getting used to how it works and they way things are organized/setup. As mentioned by the others the Search feature is a very powerful tool and can help you find info on various topics without having to wait for people to answer you threads..

Check out the Troubleshooting 4x4 problems for information on diagnosing your 4x4 issue.

my 91 wouldent go into 4wd the lights on dash wouldent light up and there was clicking in back from computer so i looked around and i just took a hammer and hit it kinda lightly a few times on the motor mounted on the transfer case and it workes perfect now

Hi Dickster-I have a 92 EB, and twice had seemingly the same problem. You might try removing the shift motor and cleaning the contacts inside it. The motor is in a place where it can get it's fair share of road dirt. It seems that the motor indexes off the 2 wheel drive position, and if the motor doesn't get back to that position, it basically gets lost, and stops working. Same thing tends to happen with 4x4 Explorers and Rangers where the 4 wheel drive isn't used much. Not sure it's the problem, but may be worth a try. Good luck!
