Well I've just gotten my 4405 bolted back together.

The rear/main outputshaft will move 1/8" downwards (and only downwards, toward the ground if the tcase was on a vehicle). The bearing was tight when I pressed it in. Will having the flange and nut on and torqued to spec tighten everything up or is the case half bad?

Front output shaft is solid, doesn't move at all.

I dont think there should be any up/down play on the rear output shaft, but its been a while since I touched a 4405 so torque it down a bit to see if it goes away. Maybe you can break out a vernier caliper and check that the two (old and new) bearings have the same ID.

IZwack I owe you a beer, thats what it was.

I got a bearing/seal kit from TB Trans, there was an extra bearing in it. OD's were the same but of course I pressed in the bearing with the larger ID.

Oh would you look at that!!
That bumps my ratio of correct replies to 0.000000000001 --- a celebration!

I've got my '95 output shaft playing up and down in the tranfer case when I move it; what is that? is it a bearing problem? how do I fix it? can it cause the noise (grinding) that I feel under my foot when accelerating??
