Ok, I will have the codes run Monday hopefully at Ford.

This happened before, but ONLY when it was below freezing a few times.

1996 V6 SOHC 2WD auto Explorer. No clue on mileage, odo stopped a LONG time back, by oil changes which should be pretty accurate, about 325K miles. Nothing done to Trans ever other than regular changes, no synthetic used ever.

Start engine, put in reverse and it shudders and makes racket. Put into D and same thing, so put in R and ease out of spot, go to forward and all is fine. O/D flashing.... done it twice in 2 years in the cold.

Thursday on way home when it was 80 but really humid/rainy, it did it again and this time going to D, it would not accel worth a flip, VERY slow to accel and shift. Figured it was toast and needed to be home to leave for a trip so drove the 8miles home. Figured I"d yank it today and start researching.

Got home today, started it, after checking all fluids which are fine, normal color and no burned smell at all.... no O/D flashing and drove all gears just like normal.

I don't have any value in this critter, was bought new, IE its paid for itself... and I'm waiting for a friend to sell their escape to us at some point.

So right now I was thinking yank the trans, replace torque converter and just gut and rebuild the trans would be fun project since I always wanted to try that and have not much to loose here other than parts cost...

But I keep ending up, what if its soemthing electronic somewhere else and I go to all that trouble and put it back in and it does it again.... grrr.... that wouldn't have been fun then... at this mileage I figure a converter and rebuild coulnd't hurt but I really need to know I'm fixing the problem...

Will be doing more research Monday as time allows. Spent the long weekend watching you tubes how to take it apart, out etc.... and was going to get to how to rebuild next...

Now I need to konw I"m on the right track at least....

Codes P1701 and P1749

Both I think mean pressure solenoid issues inside the transmission, not a wiring harness issue or otherwise.

I just want to be sure before I start tearing stuff apart.

Of course today it runs just fine again. And likely I"ll just hold onto the codes until it does it enough to justify the issues.

Its done it now 3 times in about 2 years IIRC... thats not enough to worry about until it is.. LOL.
