I have a 95 xlt 4x4. Was driving on freeway, suddenly lost tranny. fluid level ok. changed filter. pump works. there was no noise and no symptoms prior to failure. have no gears, forward or reverse. can hear and feel tranny engage. if I rev up engine, can get it to move very slowly. any thoughts?

Quite likely a busted OD sprag. Check line pressure first. If the line pressure is low, suspect your Valve Body.... If the line pressure is ok, you likely have a broken front OD sprag (one way clutch).

thanks for the info...
pulled tranny today. how can I tell if the torque converter is ok or not? should I put a master rebuild in since the tranny's out?

If you are planning on a DIY rebuild by ALL MEANS DO IT... err... YES. Not just a master kit but some select hard parts as well.... and a VB rebuild.

Rebuild the valve body too. Flush out the cooler before you reinstall the transmission.
