I just ordered a 4R55E from a wrecked 98 but mine is a 96. It hasn't been driven in a while and totally forgot that the 98 is a sohv vs the 96 ohv. Is there any reason why this trans won't bolt right up? Thanks.

It will bolt on, but......the 96 is a 4R55E and the 98 is a 5R55E. The computer won't be able to control it because it has extra solenoids. It doesn't matter about the engine.

I thought the 5R55E was used exclusively for the 5.0?

No, the 5.0 had the 4R70W.

Some 98s still had the 4R55E, so don't worry.

There may be minor differences (for the better), but everything should bolt right up. Not totally sure if the electrical connectors stayed the same, but it's only a few wires.

Cool, you had me worried. I thought I made a serious mistake but looks like everything will be fine. Thanks for the help.

"Some 98s still had the 4R55E, so don't worry."

Why would they ever do that after they started putting the 5R55E starting in 97?

No. The 4R was done away with at the end of the '96 model year. They started the 5R after that. No '98s would have the 4R.

Well, I've personally seen some 97s and 98s with them! I swear I'm not on the crack!
