I am taking the tranny down to a transmission guy here in town and I am needing to know what upgrade/update I need to have him do for my Upgraded v-8 4x4 tow rig mountaineer . He told me he could just do a standard rebuild ,but I want to have the weak spots fixed . He said find out and he would do it .

I strongly suggest you go to TCCOA.COM and look at this article.
http://tccoa.com/articles/tranny/transmission/index.shtml

You have the same exact trans as the Tbird. That article was written by a Ford Trans engineer. You can deciede what mods you do and dont want.

You can also register there to discuss this trans, there are guys there who are building it up for high performance purposes.

Do upgrade to the later(99+) mechanical diode. That requires the diode and the reverse drum, it's been on eBay for about $120 often. The many articles about the 4R70W tell the story in detail. Good luck,

I'd also read the 4R70W Rebuild diary here as well.

Agreed. Say Chris, have you read more about the "J mod" stuff, to have an opinion of that versus other kits? I need to reread a lot of stuff, and order some parts. Regards,

Don... has been a while for me, but the J mod was mainly affecting the rate at which apply circuits could apply various components (larger holes, faster apply) or how quickly an accumulator would fill (faster apply, or quicker release). I think to say that the J mod forecloses other fixes is probably an overstatement, but I would investigate what circuit I am playing with on any Mod after a J mod. It is safe to say that the 4R70W VB didn't exhibit a lot of problems internally, based on the low number of aftermarket "fixes" for it. Pressure regulator mainly. This is likely due to the lack or near total lack of modulation used.
