4r70w won't shift 3 to 4 un less you take foot of gas..

Got a 97 awd 5.0 awd explorer .. With 289,000 miles on stock never rebuilt trans ... It just started to get a issue only if it sets over nite it won't shift from 3rd to 4th unless u take you foot off of the gas and wait a second , after that it's fine all day... I'm thinking 3/4 shift springs broke but I'm a lil un sure though ... Any info will help

I would think if spring was broke it would do it all the time. Maybe a temp issue? do you have any engine codes? Coolant temp will affect shift strategy as will MAF sensor. Trans fluid temp sensor. PCM relies on several sensors to determine shifting strategy.
 












It's definitely not ford shudder problem had that on my other 5.0L explore. Which the fix was to replace the torque converter, because the friction modifier doesn't do anything.. Two years ago it shifted hard into first and second I replaced one to shift spring that was broken in half that solved that problem. Now it's just a no shift from 3rd to 4th until foot it's taken off the gas pedal. Which I'm thinking is either 3/4 broke spring or possible valve body issue.
 






Did run all codes .. Found the same one it's always had , 1/1 o2 slow response due to cracked header.And seen a slite flat spot in tps when I did a sweep on it to wide open throttle.But I didn't see any were that I contoled the trany shift points... So no I'm back to scratching my head
 






Electronic System Description
The powertrain control module (PCM) and its input/output network control the following transmission operations:


- Shift timing.
- Line pressure (shift feel).
- Torque converter clutch.

The transmission control is separate from the engine control strategy in the PCM, although some of the input signals are shared.

The PCM receives some input signals from engine-related sensors:


- Mass air flow sensor (MAF sensor).
- Engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor).

These signals provide information to the PCM about the load and climate under which the engine is operating. Some other inputs are based on driver inputs, such as accelerator pedal position, which is sent to the PCM by the throttle position sensor (TP sensor). Still other inputs are provided by:


- Transmission components.
- Output shaft speed sensor.
- Transmission range (TR) sensor (controlled by driver placement of the transmission range selector lever).
- Transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor.

Using all of these input signals, the PCM can determine when the time and conditions are right for a shift or torque converter clutch (TCC) application. The PCM can also determine the line pressure needed to optimize shift feel. To accomplish these functions, the PCM controls four electronic solenoids:


- Two on/off shift solenoids.
- One pulse-width modulated torque converter clutch solenoid (TCC solenoid) for TCC control or "controlled slip," of the TCC.
- An electronic pressure control (EPC) solenoid for line pressure control.

The PCM receives and sends electrical signals that are used to make the transmission more responsive to driver and vehicle needs.

The driver demands are transmitted to the PCM through four components:


- Transmission range selector lever - The driver demand for a particular gear range is translated into an electrical signal for the powertrain control module by the transmission range (TR) sensor.
- Accelerator pedal - The driver demand for torque and acceleration are sent mechanically to the throttle body on the engine. A throttle position sensor then translates this mechanical motion into an electrical signal and sends into the powertrain control module.
- Brake pedal - A stoplight switch tells the powertrain control module when the brake is applied, indicating the driver demand to disengage the torque converter.
- Transmission control switch - A momentary contact switch, located on the side of the transmission range selector that allows the driver to manually select three or four speed operation.
 






Well try the throttle position sensor tomorrow. Since I know there's a flat spot in it. If not I'll pull the valve body and see what I find.

Will do ... But just a idea while I was going over wireing diagrams .... What bout the silonoid pack ...
 






Ok well I got impacint .. I've got another 5.0 expo I've pulled the motor for a swap project so I swaped the tps mas air and computer quick and test ran ... Well same dam issue lol... Goina go and get solinoids the 3/4 accumulator springs and valve body gasket Monday from ford ... It's only $60 in parts and a hour or two so guess we see ... Maby I'm just not bout to give up on a rebuild just yet lmao I've gotten almost 300k on it so far with great maintenance why stop now...
 






Ok update ... Pulled valve body 3/4 spring ok but changed any ways .. Cleaned valve body . Nothing wrong ... Changed shift solinoids and reassembled any well the issue is well ....GONE no more delayed shift .. I'm guessing the solinoids pack was going out or maby just cleaning out the valve body... Idk eatker way it worked
