4wd flashing... hall effects...helppp....how do you remove??

While over the winter, I had the "famous" 4wd flashing indication and the system would drop out once the vehicle got near about 60 kmph. From help here and other postings, it appears that perhap the hall effects need "attention". So its warm enough for the attention but... how do I get them out. I got the shift motor off (three bolts plus another hold the back of the "solenoid") and a bolt on each of what appears to be wires going into the transfer case (one near the shift motor and one up near the drive shaft area).... I assume these are the hall effects. Question, how do these black plastic "fittings" come out.... or are the hall effects some how "snapped / unsnapped"... twisted???? into these back plastic holders? Thanks for any guidance. Sooner would be better as the day is expected to stay warm for a bit.... of course, snow could return anytime up til the end of april...:-(

Well... I was able to break the bolt retaining tab portion of the black plastic housing....:-((( .... still no luck in getting the housing out if indeed it is supposed to come out. It looks like this things are either sealanted in or have some trick for removal. Yikes, the sensor replacement costs are like $90 (can) each. wonder if they come with new plastic holders. It looks like this "project" ain't going to be as successful and easy as I thought :-((((

it would be helpful if you could take a snap shot of what you are trying to do.

don't have access to a digital at this time... I am still in film land :-). The sensors... look like they are in a "plastic frost plug thing". I am probably "done" for the day but hopefully someone who has taken them out will eventually chime in.

Ah yes now i remember what you're talking about ;)

Here is what the sensor looks like from the inside of the transfer case. Note that, in the image below, I put RTV around the sensor when I put it back in so you probably wont find any RTV around your sensor.

But the sensor should just pops out after youve removed the screw on the outside of the case.

thanks for the picture.... yep that appears to be similar to the "parts explosion" on the CD.... however, it ain't "popping" for me.... I have almost broken off half of the surrounding plastic lip and still no go. Did you have to take the case off to get them out???? :-(((( thanks again for any guidance.

Well yeah that transfer case was removed from the vehicle because I had to rebuild it and change some parts out - thats how I took that picture (from inside the transfer case).

But you shouldnt have to remove the transfer case from the vehicle to remove the sensor. Did you try rotating the sensor just to budge it a little bit instead of just prying it out?

Not directly... I will give that a try tomorrow although my success might be very limited on the one furthest away from the shift motor as there isn't much left to grab onto. Thanks again. I might try a heat gun on the back of the transfer case area to try and "expand" the hole a bit and see if that helps.

I think the plastic sensor might melt before the transfer case's casing starts expanding ;)

just curious before you did/are rebuilding it did you restet the computer?...that was the cure for mine.

yes a couple of times... it is a very repeatable sequence.... switch to 4wd auto, go over 60kmph, 4wd light goes out, 4wd drops out, and a few seconds/ minutes later, the ever "popular" flashing 4wd lights. Resetting does nothing to help or hinder this sequence. From what I can figure from here and CD, this is the point where the system detects to get a difference between the front and rear axles and "gives up", taking the system down.

As for melting the plastic, I don't intent to get the case that hot but hope to break any "stuff" holding the plastic in the hole. Will see, maybe I will leave well enough alone as I don't really use the 4wd that often and certainly not in the summer.

plus you may not need 4wd at those speeds anyway ;) you're not doing a rally race now are u? ;)

you are right.... if I am going that fast, its got to be dry pavement...:-) I certainly don't have the money for replacing the sensors because I broke them... I was hoping that cleaning would help but I will have to think on it some more. Anyways, thanks for the guidance... exactly what I was looking for. Got to attack an Olds today as my wife (the "shop foreman") says it needs oil and probably a thermostat change (low temp all the time).
