hi, im new to the forum so hello and thanks in advance for the help.
heres the deal: i have a 97 eddie bauer auto tranny 4.0v6 4wd. when i go from auto to 4wdhi the light comes on and i believe it is working. when i park in neutral and hold the brake i shift it to 4wd low and hear a series of about 4 clicks or so... like its trying to engage. the light doesnt come on and it feels like its not engaged. when i first got it, it worked fine but just last week out of nowhere i tried the 4wdlow and this **** started happening. any help or comments would be greatly appreciated. btw, im going to do the test by jacking up the front end. thanks guys

In reality, 99.99999% of the people out there don't need 4LO. So if I were you and this is just a daily driver (with maybe an occasional trail run), I'd forget about spending the time and $$ fixing 4LO engagement 'cauz you probably dont really need the 2.xx increase in torque provided by the LO gear.

BUt if you still want 4LO, here's some good reading:

And in case you need to rebuild the shift motor:

^^i agree. i just did the 4whi test and it is working. i used that the other day to get through like 8-10inches of sloppy mud and had no probs. guess im a little obsessive, i just want everything working.
