My best friend has a '94 Explorer XLT. He has the pushbutton 4wd. He converted the auto locking hubs to manual. The 4wd worked fine until recently. It won't go into 4wd. The indicator light won't light up. The only thing it does is make a short clicking noise coming from the rear cargo area. I'm thinking a relay problem. Any ideas? Thanks as always...

Its the transfer case actuator motor. Mine did the same thing. You can either pull it out and clean the contacts or you can just buy a new one for $250 and swap it in. I forget the name of the website, but there is a site with tons of info on how to do this yourself, maybe someone else can post it up here...

Here is that website for your transfer case...

Yes, the transfer case motor is a notorious problem on Ex's. Some have found simply repositioning it can solve the problem, others rebuild it, some do a remove and replace. The link referred to (I am sure there are others) is:

Hope this helps. By the way, for you and others. This website has a page called "Explorer Resources" with a link to Explorer maintenance tips... go check it out, they have articles on this and many many more subjects. It alonne would answer a goodly number of questions posted here.

Happy Exploring

Chris

ps. Mine went at 150K
