4wd Problems! PLEASE HELP!!!

well, i have a 98 explorer with the control trac 4wd system. under normal operation( in auto mode) the truck should be in 2wd mode till it senses a slip then activate the front wheels? am i correct? well when the truck spins the rear the front tires just sit there and do nothing. when i turn the knob to 4wd high, the ligh comes on, but still no 4wd, and when i turn the knob to 4wd low, the 4wd high light is still on, and no 4wd low, i don't know what to check! please help me!!! :(

thats it! wow seems like alot more to me, can you explan how this transfer case motor works? are they expensive to replace? thanks for your help.
 






ok, still having problems! the reverse light circuit is messed up big time! i put a new fuse in there and when i go into reverse, the light works and as soon as i put the truck in to drive pop there the fuse goes, could it be that the trans range sensor is broken, or something else. i was looking at the diagram, and i notice that the fuse socket has the Electric shift, GEM,DTR sensor, as well as the back up lights on it. i believe my problem is there. can anyone shed some light my way , thanks

Sounds like Electrical fault to me.Hmmmm start with checking the wires at the shifter motor and see if any dammage has happened.Make sure you check arround the trans shifter too.You could have rubbed through some wires that have been improperly routed
 






try disconnecting the reverse lamp switch (at the switch), then try again with it disconnected. Need to make sure that it is not shorting - I think it is possible for that switch to short in either position.

If the problem is still there, disconnect the DTR and try again with both disconnected


If the problem is still there, disconnect the transfer case motor. There may be one wire you have to cut. Try again with all items disconnected.

If the problem is still there, you are down to the wiring shorts, relays ( if any on these circuits) and the GEM.

The actual order of testing the above is up to you - the logic is simple - keep disconnecting sections of the circuit till the problem goes away, then work that circuit till you find your problem.

Unless you have a complex problem, this should pin down where your trouble is at.
