Okay, Ive done a search on the board about 4wd problems but i can seem to find one that is really like mine. I have a 95 ltd. When i used to put it into 4wd auto nothing would happen and the 4wd high and low lights would blink. So i have disconnected the battery for at least and hour. and reconnected it. after that i try to engage 4wd high and it will go, but when i drive i hear sort of a loud grinding noise, its not bad ina straight line, but horrible when i try to turn the wheel. And the wheel is very stiff now. It sounds like to two smooth metal plates rubbing up against each other.
But when i put it in 4wd LOW its worse. In a straight line i hear it and when i press on the pedal the power is "jerky".
what could this be. Oh yeah, i took it into service about a yar ago and the ford guys said they fixed some problems with it. but now its off warranty so i have to look into it myself. nothing like this happened after the service.

The GEM may need to be reprogrammed. IF you look at the TSB's for your year you will find what you need.

okay. now im not to good at this but what is the GEM and TSB ??? and how would i reprogram it ???

Gem = General Electronic Module
TSB = Technical Service Bulletin

If you are in 4x4hi or lo on the road or hard pack surface, you will definitely hear nasty noises from your front end. DO NOT engage Hi or Low on the street (unless it is snow covered of course)! If the 4x4 lights blink while in auto, it probably means your speed sensors are bad/need cleaning or you GEM is screwy.

Wait!! He has a '95 so he doesn't have 4WD High. He only has 2WD, 4WD Auto and Low.

all i can tell you is your x is doing the exact same thing as mine right down to the blinking lights. in the manual it says to contact your ford dealership and i did and they said they have to hook it up to some machine and test it to pinpoint the problem i guess. mine sounds exactly the same like it needs to be oiled or something. and when i turn the wheel it makes a clunking noise. it doesn't sound good at all so i'm gonaa take it to ford. bringing it to my mechanic might be too much of a hassle seeing how ford would know exactly what the problem is.

hey alphabets13 keep me informed on whats going on with your truck. Its summer here in toronto but soon enough winter will roll around again and i want to make certain i have 4wd to run in the snow.
if anyone has any other suggestions on what i might be able to do let me know i'm willing to try anything.

i'm goin on vacation in a couple weeks and thats when i'm havin my x looked at by ford. i'll keep you updated. same here, but it has got to be done for winter.
