The electronic 4wd switch is not working. Does anyone know how I can test the switch? (I removed the original switch and replaced it w/ one I purchased from the junkyard - still doesn't work). I need help testing the switch &/or system. What do I have to look for?

Dead Link Removed

no 4X4

the link is what you need. this is a very common problem with older ex's and rangers. i have a 91 ranger that had same thing wrong. the fix is easy and alot cheeper than replacment of shift motor.

Did you hear the click coming from the back of the truck with the old switch? Do you hear it with the new switch? If not, then the relay in the rear may be bad. You can test it, instructions are on the site linked to above. If you can hear the click, then the problem is more likely the transfer case itself.

by following the direction of Explorer owners using the link above (thanks) I was able to get motor assembly out, cleaned & reassembled

1 - 4x4 now kicks in & works

2 - low range does not work

3 - when I drive around corners in 4x4 it feels like my front wheels are starting to bind &/or stop the truck from going forward or backward

Now what?

notes (in case they are important) - before removing the motor, I tried the 4x4 & low range switches & heard a click at the rear relay/main processor board & the red light came on (not blinking)

when you removed the motor, did you reinsert in the same way it was removed?

4X4 Low - Full Stop, in neutral, and foot on brake before engaging?

Wheels will bind on tight turns. I have same problem. Just steer slightly wider turns.

If you are driving in 4x4 on pavement or hard pack surface, you will get binding. You will also blow your hubs and other parts very quickly. That is why 4x4 is a NO NO on Pavement.
