My wife got the explorer stuck about 3 weeks ago and I have a couple questions. The explorer terrain management system shut down for about 5 to 10 minutes, and I figure it did that was due to trying to protect the system from overheating. Is there a way to provide extra cooling to whatever is heating up? What tires for the 20's do a lot of you guys/girls switch to after the oems are used up? I still think overall the explorer is amazing, and I know no vehicle is immune to getting stuck.

Did you get a warning on the left display? If so, codes were stored, take it to your dealer. Mine did this too and it required 2 new parts. One was a module and the rotary switch. It worked fine the next day but because it threw a code, Ford hotline told the dealer what to replace.

The 4WD Off message may also be displayed in the message
center if the 4WD system has overheated and defaulted to front-wheel
drive. This condition may occur if the vehicle was operated in extreme
conditions with excessive wheel slip, such as deep sand. To resume
normal 4WD function as soon as possible, stop the vehicle in a safe
location and stop the engine for at least 10 minutes. After the engine has
been restarted and the 4WD system has adequately cooled, the 4WD Off
message will turn off and normal 4WD function will return. The 4WD Off
message will turn off when the system cools and normal 4WD function
returns.​

The manual recommends turning the traction control OFF when stuck in deep snow to see if it helps get you going again. Also, do not rock the vehicle for more than a few minutes or damage to the transmission and tires may occur or the engine may overheat (from the manual). There is nothing mentioned about the TMS turning itself off under these conditions.
As for tires, I am a firm believer in using Winter tires and not just for snow. Many people do not realize that all seasons begin to lose traction at just 43 degrees F on bare roads. I replaced the 20" OEM tires with Yokohama Parada Spec-X tires the day I picked up the Explorer from the dealer. They have a more aggressive tread than the Hankooks. My Winter tires are BF Goodrich Winter Slalom KSI mounted on the Base Explorer 17" steel rims.
The pic is of the Yokohama tire and that is not a picture of the rims I have. It is on the OEM 20" rim.

The Optimo tires just don't perform very well in snow. See my write up from about a week ago. I concur with Peter. Better tires will make all the difference, especially in the cold.

Thanks guys/girls for the info. Oil change is coming up ill tell them about the system turning itself off. By next winter ill have some more aggressive tires.
