I picked up my 2001 xlt 4x4 (Australian, floor shift auto) a while back. Thanks to the help on these forums I was able to replace timing chain, sprockets and tensioners successfully. It started spitting out a spark plug after that, which was fixed with a helicoil.
Overall motor and gearbox are ok. However, I went on a beach trip a while back and the transfer case got locked into 4x4 high. I had to drive about 80kms to home, with popping and grinding
After this, I was unable to get the transfer case unlocked from 4x4. I tried a lot of things, driving backwards, disabling electronics, manually overriding the shift motor. None of this worked, leading me to believe that the transfer case front clutch plates (supposedly driven by an electromagnetic system) had seized into 4x4.
So I removed the front drive shaft and the truck goes well in 2wd mode.
Now I would like to fix the transfer case and go 4x4-ing again. Is there a preferred fix? Should I source a second hand transfer case from a matching vehicle? Or do manual transfer case conversion to an older BW case?
