Steve

I had the exact same symtons a couple months back. I started looking on the internet for some help and came across this website. I ended up removing the shift motor from the transfer case. I realigned the selector shaft with the motor and put it back on. I have not had any problems since. Read this post there is step by step procedures and good pictures. I hope this helps

Both lights blinking means that the system has found a fault. Without knowing which trouble code has been stored, it's a guessing game. You can try re-aligning the shift motor, you could try replacing the speed sensor on the rear axle. Without knowing what, exactly, the problem is, it's a guessing game.

If it was a one-time occurrence, I wouldn't worry about it. Mine did it to me back in fall of '98 slowing down an off-ramp after a 60-mile drive. To this day it's still a mystery as it has yet to do it again.

911 Auto 4x4

I just rebuilt the 4.0SOHC motor in my 98. The explorer sat for 6 months. After getting it on the road I had the same problem. Took off the shift motor. Took it apart and cleaned it up and put it back on. No issues. I think you have to shift these puppies once in a while.

911 call

What do you guys know about the auto 4x4 transfer case?? What tells the transfer case to ingauge power to the front axle?? Speed of both axle inputs to a brianbox (PC) telling a solenoid to ingauge clutch??? I'm having some jerking during acceleration only in the auto 4x4 mode. Motor runs fine. So its not a miss there.

Power to the Transfer Case Clutch comes from the Torque On Demand relay. On *some* vehicles, power is somehow fed through the Transfer Case Shift Relay, but I haven't found a pattern to which vehicles that affects.

Read through the Comprehensive Brown Wire Mod thread for a halfway decent explanation of the workings of the system.

And, odds are, your system is being told to engage. Under moderate throttle inputs, the system will tell the transfer case to cycle in and out. Completely normal. Mine's done it since day one. Doesn't hurt a thing, but drove me nuts until I did the BWM myself last summer.
