Had the opportunity to use 4wd hi in the snow and ice last month. Turning right I get a binding noise that drags the engine down as well. When I turn to 4wd auto it goes away. It does not happen when turning left. My wife drove it in 4wd hi for about 80 miles on dry pavement recently.
Did she damage it in the process?
Thanks,
Richard

no, it just sounds like that is normal.... the 4x4 when turning wants to spin all 4 at the same speed... but it cant due to the road conditions and the fact that it is turning...... in 4x4 on my truck, if i turn the wheel and it is idling, the truck wont move...

If you are basing this off, say the 4 wheel drive system in something luxury like an infinity qx4, it may seem quite abnormal. When I first got my car I freaked out about it. (Many) Luxury cars have a center differential that will allow the front and the rear to spin at different speeds, and still call the car a Four wheel drive car, although it is essentially an All wheel drive car. It is normal for it to bind up. I don't know about why it wouldn't bind turning left, mabey it put a wheel on a very slippery surface like ice and allowed it to slip without your knowledge. Good luck with it, and welcome to the site, you'll find it is THE BEST explorer resource you will ever find, it is VERY addictive.
