I just got a 92 xlt from a friend of mine. The problem is when I put it in 4x4 and go foward or backward just about every 10 feet I can hear and feel a loud banging or slamming noise in the front end. This does it on dry wet and dirt. If any one can help me please do so I'm going crazy here.

Is this your first 4x4? Some popping/banging is normal as the tires/axles catch up to each other even on dirt, but the system is not made for pavement, dry or wet. Are you turning when you hear the noise? Check the transfer case fluid level also and change/fill it if needed.

There are a lot of things that can cause front end noise. In my case the front end clunk was due to bad ball joints. I replaced all 4 and no more clunks :)

i know your not supposed to use it on dry pavement. I am only going straight when trying it out. Actually there is no way that this sound is normal it sounds like the front axles are about to fall out. My friend said it could be either the hubs or U-joints does this sound right?
